Is Gum Disease Treatable?

Posted on 2/8/2021 by Dr. Boustany
Is Gum Disease Treatable?Gum disease is a bacterial infection that affects the gum tissue on the teeth. When plaque builds up around the crown of the tooth, it causes your immune system to release antibodies to fight off the bacteria. In turn, this can lead to inflamed, reddish gums. The teeth might also become loose from the root and may fall out.

Can Gum Disease Be Treated?

Fortunately, gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) is treatable through various medical procedures. Our dentists can professionally do these procedures to restore your gums to health.

One of the ways to treat gum disease is through scaling and root planning. The procedure involves removing bacteria from the crown and root of the tooth. By smoothening the area where most bacteria build up, it can prevent the disease from recurring.

Flap surgery is another way to treat periodontitis. The infected gum is folded back to remove plaque and tartar, then reattached to a now clean tooth.

If you are experiencing bone loss due to gum disease, getting bone graft surgery might be your best option. This procedure entails adding either a synthetic or natural bone where the gum disease destroyed the last bone. Treatment of gum disease can take from a few weeks to months, depending on which dental procedure will be right for you.

Ways to Help Prevent Gum Disease

To avoid getting gum disease, try adopting good dental practices. Daily habits, such as brushing after every meal, help prevent bacteria from turning into plaque, which is hard to remove.

Regular visits to our dentist clinic allow for early detection of gum disease before it becomes severe. It is better to catch the infection early before it causes permanent damage to your teeth and gums. If you find you are experiencing any gum disease symptoms, do not hesitate to pay a visit to our office for professional treatment.
