Charleston, WV

How long do dental crowns last? Here at Revive Dental and Implant Center we get these questions a lot and the answer is up to 15 or so years. However, as with anything else, that depends on the care you take of yourself and the dental crowns themselves. They can last upwards of 25-30 years.

What Determines How Long They Last?

There are various factors that affect the life of your dental crown. Your mouth is very complex, and it takes a lot of care to keep it working properly. Here are some of the elements factored in when we talk about how long your crown can last.

First and foremost, all procedures require good oral hygiene to increase success. That means brushing daily at least twice a day. Ensure that you’re eating habits don’t put your oral health at risk, especially with a crown. Be careful what you put in your mouth. For example, don’t chew on ice, or bite your fingernails. Try not to grind or clench your teeth. Don’t use your teeth to rip open packages.

Another factor is what material your crown is actually made of. They are made of porcelain, gold, ceramic, porcelain fused to metal and metal alloys. Each has its own advantages, and some are used over others depending on the tooth the crown is replacing.

Signs that Your Crown Might Need Replacing

There are generally a couple of different reasons a crown needs to be replaced. There could be a cosmetic reason, or the tooth or crown somehow becomes damaged and needs to be replaced to preserve the health of the tooth.

Some signs might be that your upper and lower teeth do not fit together correctly, and this is probably just excess wear on the surface due to normal chewing. Or you might grind your teeth at night. Grinding your teeth tends to put a lot of stress on your teeth and especially on your crowns. If you continue to suffer from this the dentist may suggest that you wear a bite guard to help protect your crown.

Some other signs that the crown might need replacing is if there is pain around the crown. The whole reason the crown was put in place was to protect the tooth that is beneath the crown itself. If the crown itself becomes broken or cracked, you could experience some pain in that area where the crown and tooth are. When that tooth under the crown is exposed it is very suspectable to decay and bacteria. If you notice any pain or swelling or tenderness you should call our office right away. At that point, one of our professionals can either recommend to either repair or replace the crown depending on the damage.

Please call us here at Revive Dental and Implant Center immediately if you are experiencing any problems at all with your crowns or with your teeth at all, no matter what the situation may be. We have an on site prosthodonist and are here to help with all your oral health concerns. Our office number is (304) 467-4265
