As you age, your teeth may undergo challenges and problems that you never had to worry about when you were younger. Worn dentition, or tooth erosion, is one of these concerns that only becomes more acute and common as you get older. Learning how to prevent worn dentition can help your teeth stay healthy and strong.

Can My Diet Lead To Worn Dentition?

Worn dentition is caused when acids in your mouth lead to a permanent loss of tooth enamel. This can be caused by insufficient oral care, dental conditions, and poor dietary habits. If your diet involves drinking a lot of alcohol or sodas, we can see this reflected by occasional hollowed-out areas on the surface of the affected teeth. The acid from these drinks washes repeatedly across your teeth, wear away the enamel, and cause worn dentition over time. Even if your teeth resist the acid from the drinks themselves, your mouth can become a more acidic environment that can accelerate this erosion process. If you can at least have a meal along with drinks like these, you can help balance the amount of acid in the mouth.

What Are Other Causes Of Worn Dentition?

We also see some patients who experience worn dentition because of habits such as improper biting or tooth grinding. Grinding your teeth can wear down and eventually flatten the parts of your teeth that you chew with. Also, worn dentition can be seen among patients who brush their teeth too aggressively or use a toothbrush with hard bristles. This constant attack on your teeth can result in a notch-like surface near your gumline. If either of these are habits you are familiar with, make an appointment with us and we can talk with you about the efficacy of mouthguards and proper brushing techniques.

How Do We Treat Worn Dentition?

If one or more of your teeth have eroded substantially, we can often address this through the use of dental filling. Through the use of gold, silver, or plastic fillings, we can bolster the strength of the tooth for up to decades at a time and in a way that looks aesthetically pleasing to you. If you have not yet lost much of your tooth to worn dentition, using toothpaste with fluoride can help to reduce the sensitivity of affected teeth as you change your habits to lessen the ongoing erosion. Scheduling routine appointments with us can also help, as we can monitor your teeth over time to make sure that they do not continue to erode.

We want to help you take any steps possible to prevent further worn dentition and to preserve your great smile. If you think you may have any worn dentition problems or wish to learn more, schedule an appointment with Dr. Chad Boustany by calling us today at (304) 467-4265.
